Hair transplant choices

What are the long-term options for hair transplant? “Hair transplant have increased in the last six years and are increasingly socially reasonable, with stars like Wayne Rooney talking openly about theirs. However, operation should always be thought through advertently.

“At the first step of hair loss, try one of two FDA approved medicines: Minoxidil, that is a topical treatment available over-the-counter ; or Finasteride, which is an oral, prescription-only.

Is hair loss developing?

Yes it is accelerating, thus once you start these treatments keep on them for at least one year if you’re planning a hair transplant operation.

Secondly, don’t make an instant decision. No one wants to lose his hair, so you’re beginning from a point of feeling vulnerable, lacking in self-confidence and wanting a quick solution. So do your research.

Hair transplants are nothing to be ashamed of

A number of famous names have gone public about having a transplant. Actor James Nesbitt, gossip-column favourite Calum Best and football star Wayne Rooney are among those who have spoken about their procedures.

Is a hair transplant painful?

The procedure is conducted under local anaesthetic. Some patients report discomfort but outright pain is unusual. The scalp will be tender for a few days post-surgery and painkillers are normally prescribed.

Can hair transplants fail?

Like any other surgery, failure is possible; but the percentages are very low. Failure can be a result of the patient being an unsuitable candidate or poor work by the surgeon.

FUE transplant

The FUE Technique, which is based on the principle of removing grafts one by one from the dense nape region between the two ears, is the most commonly used hair transplantation technique in the world today. The extracted grafts are then implanted into the opened channels and the transplantation process is completed. This way of hair transplantation is called FUE Technique.

The patient is examined and analyzed by the doctor and the best planning drawing is drawn for him. During planning, the donor area is checked, the number of grafts needed by the patient and how many grafts are going to be transplanted to which part is determined. For example, when a total of 4000 grafts are decided for the patient, it will be determined how many grafts will be added to the frontal line (right – left), how many grafts will be added to the middle area, and how many grafts will be added to the crown area.  So for example 4000 grafts can be distributed to the front line (1250 + 1250), the center area (1000) and the crown area (500). The distribution of grafts will vary from patient to patient. However, the distribution of these planning drawings and grafts must certainly be done by the doctor.

ATP transplant

Another minimally invasive option is a new treatment called ATP (ADVANCED TRICO PIGMENTATION), This is essentially tattooing on the illusion of stubble with a tiny needle and a special type of ink that lasts five to seven years. Depending on the area treated, it costs between £1,500 and £4,000.

There’s speculation the actors Vin Diesel and The Rock have had this done and it works best on very short or shaved hair. There are more permanent methods available but I wouldn’t recommend them because it if goes wrong, you’re stuck with the results.

FUT transplant

In the FUT procedure, a strip of hair-bearing skin is removed from the donor site, usually the back of the head. This is why FUT is also known as ‘strip’ operation.

The long-term donor hair supply will be influenced by how loose the scalp skin is and by how many hairs there are per square centimetre of donor area. Generally speaking, the FUT procedure leaves scar on back of the head due to incisions.

The strip is then placed under high-powered microscopes and the surgical team divides it into tiny grafts of individual follicular units comprised of one to four hairs. These grafts are placed in a chilled tissue storage solution until they are transplanted.

The donor area is stitched up and usually then covered by the surrounding hair but always there is a scar line around the donor site. After between 10 and 14 days the stitches are removed and the donor area heals to form a linear scar.
